Skin Resurfacing

istock_92638885_largeSkin resurfacing can effectively improve many conditions, including weathered skin, freckling, blotchy pigmentation, sun damage, fine wrinkles and shallow acne scars. There are a variety of methods to do this, depending on your schedule and downtime and skin condition.

Laser Treatment(s)

The introduction of fractional laser skin resurfacing dramatically changed the way plastic surgeons approach resurfacing techniques. Since discomfort and healing time are minimized, fractional resurfacing has become more appealing to a wider range of people. The procedure reduces skin imperfections and promotes collagen regeneration, reclaiming the skin’s youthful texture, tone and color. Results will vary depending on age, degree of sun damage and skin type.

Topical anesthetics are applied and sometimes oral medications are prescribed. Administering nerve blocks is another option that completely numbs the area being treated. Some patients will choose to do the procedure under light anesthesia, or while undergoing another surgical procedure at the same setting.

Within a few days, new skin will appear that is smoother and more even-toned. Normal activities may be resumed, in most cases, within 5-7 days. The treated skin will continue to improve over six to nine months as the new collagen builds replacing the old collagen.

Chemical Peels

Trichloracetic Acid chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes leading to healthier glowing skin. TCA is a non-toxic chemical that has been used to perform skin peels for over 40 years. Unlike some other peels, TCA peels have the advantage of creating a fresh natural appearing complexion, while preserving the normal skin color. For this reason, they are often referred to as “freshening peels”.

The Blue Peel Radiance is made by Obagi and has less downtime than the traditional TCA peel but is usually repeated multiple times over a period of months to achieve the best long-term result.

The layers of skin with the most problems and damage will be removed with the peel over a few days, revealing a fresh new layer of skin. It’s not over in the office. The chemicals continue working on the deeper layers of your skin to reveal the most naturally beautiful and fresh layer. The remaining skin is tighter, smoother and rejuvenated. Best of all, the in-office portion of the treatment doesn’t take very long.

Dr. Berger will work with you to choose the correct type of skin resurfacing procedure for your skin and your lifestyle.
